Halliday Clark Create Ground-Breaking Student Living Scheme in Leeds
Carlton Hill Phase II has been designed specifically with the students’ mental health in mind.
After 20 years of Carlton Hill being one of the main student residents in Leeds, 2021 saw the destruction of the project we designed all those years ago to make way for its bigger sister in the form of a 604-bed student accommodation scheme. Carlton Hill phase II has a very defined core focus of promoting positive well-being in its design which is a prime focus for all our buildings. Halliday Clark is excited about this ground-breaking student living scheme.
Replacing a scheme designed by Halliday Clark over 25 years ago on the same site, for the same developer Pickard Properties, the new design provides affordable accommodation with outdoor spaces as key to well-being.
“We believe this scheme may be unique, certainly in Leeds, and possibly in the UK, specifically responding to the issues surrounding students’ mental health”, says Former Director Adam Clark. Working with Unipol Student Homes and the University of Leeds, Halliday Clark have developed a series of design features embedded within the scheme which aim to combat these issues.
Bedroom CGI
In addition to larger than standard bedrooms and living spaces, the scheme incorporates a series of 3-storey Sky Gardens, which provide social and common study spaces for clusters of apartments.
“It is critical to ensure students have safe and secure spaces, in addition to their own study bedroom”, says Clark. In addition to these Sky Gardens, the large fully landscaped roof terraces are provided to give additional ‘fresh air’ spaces as an extension of the extensive landscaped courtyard at ground level.
Adam Clark concludes “We have had the benefit of working with the client team for more than 25 years on various student living projects, using the latest Student Survey data from Unipol, who are the preeminent authority on student experience and management. We want to use this combined experience to really make a step change in the criteria used by developers for any form of student accommodation project”.
Leeds Context CGI
Moving on a year and May 2022 saw the topping out celebration of Core A. A great celebration all round of how the building has come on this past year. The project is really starting to take shape and here you can view some fantastic drone footage from GMI construction.
The project was completed at the end of summer 2023 to allow the Leeds University students to move in ready for the year ahead.
